We can spend all day reading about the different dog food brands and at the end of the day, we’re even more confused about the best dog food for our dog. Let’s face it, some dogs have not been given a healthy head start and need extra special attention that comes from human preparation rather than factory preparation.
If your dog is sick or old it might need more than just dry dog food, no matter how healthy the pet food might be. Some dog owners adopt a dog that has health issues because the puppy did not get the health support it needed from the start. Some dog owners pick up strays off the street, while others realize a certain dog food brand wasn’t as good as they thought and their dog is having repercussions from it. And some dogs are just getting old.
Should we read dog food reviews and dog food ratings? Of course, we should know what the best dog food is for the breed of dog we own and we want to know what the dog food ratings are to make sure we’re giving our dog the best food we can. But we also want to heal our beloved dog and to do that we at Dog Food Selector highly recommend supplementing with homemade chicken and beef bone broth for the best care of your sick dog. See simple recipe below.
It’s true, some dog foods are better than others and knowing what dog food we should feed our dog is a must and we have posted some of the most popular and best pet food reviews right here. We also welcome your comments if you would like to add your thoughts about a brand of dog food.
Homemade Dog Food
Depending on what kind of illness your dog might have, one of the best pet foods for your dog is homemade bone broth. Bone broth offers the nutritional support we humans would need if we were ailing and that very same dense mineral nutrition is also good for an ailing dog to get the same nutritional boost. Bone broth offers the nutritional and digestive support your dog needs to heal from most ailments.
No matter what health problem your dog might have, bone broth fed to the dog twice a day will help heal your doggie from various problems, whether it be joint, digestive, allergies, ulcers and more. Here’s a simple recipe.
Simple Bone Broth Recipe
Chicken, turkey or beef bones

Making the broth in a crock pot is the best way to do it since the bones need to cook for at least 24 hours. Some people cook the bones for 48 hours but it is not necessary.
1. Add the bones to the crock pot on high setting and fill to the brim with water.
2. Add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the water which helps extract all the minerals from the bones to make a nutritional broth.
3. When it comes to a boil turn the crock pot on low and let cook for a full 24 hours, add more water as needed during the cooking process.
4. After the broth has cooked for a full 24 hours, strain the broth and let cool before placing in the refrigerator. Give a warm cup or two, depending on the size of your dog, twice a day. The broth can be made ahead of time and frozen as well.
Save those Meat Bones for Bone Meal!
If your dog has joint or bone problems, save those bones! After you strain the broth out, layer the bones on paper towels and set aside somewhere to dry out for a few days. I like to place mine on top of the fridge, away from day to day kitchen duties. After the bones are fully dry, grind them to a powder in a good blender and store the bone meal in a container.
What Is In Dog Food?
You just made homemade bone meal which is an ingredient in all higher end dog food. Add 1 tablespoon of the bone meal to your dog’s food once a day for as long as it takes for your dog’s joints and bones to heal. Bone broth and bone meal will heal dogs with hip displacement issues, arthritis, bone problems and digestive disorders, while boosting the dog’s immunity.
