Dog’s Age & Life Stages

Dogs age faster than people. Size and breed influence the pace at which a dog ages. Smaller dogs live longer than larger dogs; they mature faster in the first years of life. Larger dogs grown-up more slowly at first but are considered mature at age five. Small and toy breeds become seniors at 8 years of age. Medium-sized breeds are somewhere in the middle in terms of maturation and lifespan.

Different breeds of dog age at varying speeds. Use the following tables as a guideline to find out your dog’s life stage according to his age.

Small and Toy Breeds

Lyfe Stage Age
Puppy Weaning to 10 months old
Adult 10 months to 8 years old
Mature > 8 years old


Medium Breeds

Lyfe Stage Age
Puppy Weaning to 12 months old
Adult 1 year to 7 years old
Mature > 7 years old


Large and Giant Breeds

Lyfe Stage Age
Puppy Weaning to 15 – 24 months old
Adult > 15 -24 months of age – 5 years old
Mature > 5 years old


Toy and small dogs are known for their long life expectancy, which can extent to 14 to 16 years. Larger dogs have a much shorter life expectancy, which ranges from 9 to 12 years in large breeds and 7 – 9 years old in giant breeds. Medium Breed dogs have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years.

Hi! I'm Dora Mancha, DVM. I am graduated for the Veterinary Medicine Faculty of Lisbon (2009). My degree is recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). I completed my degree in Veterinary Medicine in July, 2009. Over the first years as a veterinarian my work was closely related to the animal health field. I have gained some average experience having worked in Barcelona University (UAB) Equine Hospital and by working with veterinarians in Portugal. In addition, in 2009 - 2010 I was in Madrid at the University Alfonso X el Sábio doing an internship in the equine service. I am also very interested in small animal medicine and surgery. In fact I worked in several small animals clinics in Portugal improving my knowledge about small animal behavior and health. Dogs always have been present in my life, since I was a child. At the present moment I have four dogs a Labrador, a Epagnheul Breton, a Whippet and a mixed breed dog.
