How does the Dog Food Selector work?

It's quite simple... It's a 1-2 step process. You just have to fill in the form with your dog's characteristics, like gender, age, size, activity, health conditions and a few other important data and click "search". Then, you'll see a list of dog foods with the highest review score. If you wish you can see all the detailed review of each individual dog food.

Orijen Adult Dog

Orijen is known by manufacturing “Biologically appropriate pet foods from Fresh Regional Ingredients.”

They work on the belief that dogs should eat a diet that contains foods comparable to what they would eat on a natural diet in the wild.

Orijen Adult food is a dry dog food. It is loaded with the protein-packed meat ingredients including free-run chicken and turkey, whole eggs, wild-caught fish, and local fruits and vegetables.

These first-class ingredients, all sustainably farmed or fished within Canada, arrive fresh each day — so they’re preservative-free, never frozen, and overloaded with the animal proteins and fats which provides your dog a complete and balance nutrition.

(NA: not available; EV: estimated value)

Orijen Adult dog contains 42 % protein on a dry matter basis. This is more than most dog foods. This level of protein is habitually fed to more energetic dogs.

This dog food includes 29 % carbohydrates on a dry matter basis which is low percentage. As you know carbohydrates are not essential nutrients for dogs. Orijen Adult Dog food is a good food if you want to feed your dog a grain free food.

Orijen Adult Dog includes 5 % fiber on a dry matter basis. This value is 1 % above the limit established by AAFCO. However, I believe that is not a problem because this value is due to the high content in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Consult our article named “How do we convert guaranteed analysis into dry matter basis?” and find out how we calculate nutrients percentages on a dry matter basis.

Omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids are required for normal growth and functioning of the cells, muscles, nerves, and organs. Orijen include these elements in its guaranteed analysis which is obviously a quality mark.

Glucosamine and Chodroitin sulphate improve joint health and are especially important to larger dogs. Large breed size dogs put more weight on their joints thus they are more prone to arthritis development.

Detail Ingredient Analysis

Protein: The fresh ingredients – boneless chicken, boneless turkey, whole herring, boneless walleye and whole salmon – are high-quality sources of meat protein.

The other first ingredients – chicken meal, turkey meal, and salmon meal – represent concentrated sources of protein. Named meat meals are good fonts of protein.
The salmon meal used in this product is ethoxyquin-free.

Chicken liver and turkey liver are organs sourced from specific animals and thus considered beneficial constituents. Whole eggs have an exceptionally high biological value.

Chicken heart is pure muscle — all meat. It is rich in quality protein, minerals and complex B vitamins. Chicken cartilage, a source of glucosamine and chondroitin which support joint health.

Orijen Adult Dog includes kibbles containing a generous quantity of meat.

Carbohydrates: This dog food is totally grain-free. There’s no corn, wheat or soy.

Fat and oil: The salmon and herring are good sources of omega-3 fatty acid which is excellent for your dog’s skin, coat, nervous system, and heart.

Fruits and vegetables: Peas are moderately high in protein and also provide fiber. They are appearing in dog foods as a replacement for grains. Some dogs have trouble digesting them and can end up with diarrhea and other digestive problems.

Fact

There haven't been any good quality revisions on peas and nutrition in dogs, so this component may be seen as a controversial constituent.

Other fruits and vegetables (e.g cranberries, blueberries, carrots, pumpkins …) are fresh and high-quality sources of lots of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber.

Orijen also contains “botanicals” (e.g. licorice root, angelica root, fenugreek, marigold flowers, sweet fennel, peppermint leaf, chamomile, dandelion, summer savory). Orijen argues that botanicals serve as stimulants and builders to strengthen organs and tissues, facilitate digestion and help remove toxins.

I am unsure about the real benefit from botanicals included in dog foods. I belief these herbs are not dangerous for your dog. However, if you would like your dog to gain from herbs, you should maybe consult with your veterinarian assistant and an herbalist.

Supplements: Probiotics (e.g. Enterococcus faecium) are used to improve your dog’s digestive and immune systems.

Selenium yeast is a natural yeast supplement. It is believed that this ingredient has anti-cancer attributes.

Chicken liver supplies vitamin A and other vitamins and minerals (such as thiamin, zinc, copper and manganese, and vitamin C …). I don’t know how Orijen does produce chicken liver oil, but chicken liver is a named animal source of important vitamins and minerals. So it can be considered a high quality ingredient.

Chelated minerals are easier to absorb. They are usually found in high-quality dog foods.

Orijen Adult Dog does not include artificial flavors, dyes or artificial preservatives.
