Orijen dog food is produced by Champion Petfoods who were founded in 1975.

The company believes in producing “Biologically Appropriate” dog food.

Their foods can be obtained in over 60 countries.

They also make a parallel brand to Orijen called Acana. Both brands are super premium dog foods.

Orijen is one of the most costly dog foods accessible today.

Biologically appropriate Orijen is not the same that conventional dry dog foods.

Biologically Appropriate philosophy characterizes a new class of foods formulated to nourish dogs according to their evolutionary adaptation to fresh meat and protein rich diets.

Dogs developed as hunters and, regardless of a current lifestyle, their anatomical features are adjusted to an almost exclusively meat-based diet.

Orijen dog food

Orijen formulas are characterized by being rich in protein, carbohydrate limited and grain-free.

This brand does not use many conventional pet food ingredients like high-glycemic cereal grains (e.g. wheat, corn) and vegetable proteins (e.g. soy, glutens).

Orijen formulas feature a variety of meats including fresh, free-run chicken and turkey, fresh whole eggs, fresh free-range red meats and fresh saltwater and freshwater fish.

Orijen includes ingredients that are sustainably raised within Canada region and then delivered fresh each day.

Western Canada’s farms, fertile prairies, and cold clear waters are the source of fresh regional ingredients.

These ingredients are raised locally, passed fit for human consumption, and then delivered fresh and preservative-free.

What do fresh ingredients mean?

  • Never frozen: refrigeration is the only method of preservation
  • Preservative-free: no chemicals or synthetics added
  • Authentic: fresh ingredients are delivered within a day or two of harvest

Orijen won awards for the food as Pet Food of the Year from the Glycemic Research Institute in Washington, DC.

The company has also been named Manufacturer of the Year/Western Canada and won a Growing Alberta Leadership Award.

This dog food contains generous amounts of meat protein.

Orijen foods have 75 to 80 % meat and they contain 38 to 42 % protein. They only have 18 to 22 % carbohydrates which is very low.
